Fibromyalgia and your Health

Fibromyalgia is a condition that is known to affect about 3% of the worldwide population.  Fibromyalgia (FM) is commonly characterized by the presence of widespread muscle pain and aching, disturbed sleep, morning stiffness and multiple tender points all over the body.  What is puzzling to the medical society is what exactly causes FM and what exactly works best at relieving its symptoms.  The common method is to use medications aimed at decreasing inflammatory responses in the body and to prescribe other medicines aimed at relieving the symptoms.

Pregnancy and Back Pain

Did you know that one of the most commonly reported symptoms experienced by pregnant women is low back pain?  As much as 3/4’s of all pregnant women experience low back pain at one point or another during the course of their pregnancy.  Another interesting fact is that of the women who do experience low back pain during their pregnancy, 72% of these women will also experience back labor during delivery.

My First Half Marathon, Austin LiveStrong 2011

My First Half Marathon

 

            February 20, 2011.  13.1 miles.  The LiveStrong Austin Marathon.  Those were the details of what I endured that Sunday in February.  I would like to document here all the steps I took in my lead up to and during my first ever half marathon.  I have been running since I completed the Beach Body Insanity program in early December and have been tracking my running sessions using the Nike+ GPS app on the iPhone.  I started doing this when I read about

ACHY JOINTS BECOME MORE PREVALENT IN THE US

Knee PainAn article in Health.com states that the prevalence of achy joint pain is in a rise in the US.  This is attributed to the resultant rise in obesity.  They state that the percentage of people catagorized as obese with achy joint pain is 30%, while the percantage of overweight people with joint pain is 20% and the percentage of normal weight people with joint pain is 17%. Overheard while out and about…

Improve ankle stability with balance drills.

Lifehacker posted an article from the NYT about improving ankle stability with the performance of simple ankle balance drills done in 1 minute increments.  As chiropractors we have been promoting these types of exercises for years for the stability of ankle post injuries.  It is good that the NYT is promoting wellness prevention instead of retroactively seeking medications or steroid injections.  This should never be used as self treatment to an existing injury in lieu of seeing a trained professional for a proper diagnosis.  Everylittle bit helps.  Hit the read more link to see the article.
